A Little Bit of HistoryTex-N came into being in 1988. Our first layout lasted for about 6 years. It used an end-to-end concept with two endloop modules, and in between we used 4 standard tracks of the NTRAK scheme, the red, yellow and blue lines, plus the mountain line which runs at a higher level and further back on the modules than the other three. Other than a few photos we have not much left of it; most if not all modules were sold in the end. In 1994, we began to build a completely new layout, which has continuously evolved until today, and most likely will live on for years to come. We changed the selection of standard tracks to just red, yellow and the alternate blue line of NTRAK on a closed loop of modules, and added a peninsula with just a red line and a return line located essentially like the red line but from the back of the (standard 2 foot deep) modules; we dubbed this the "bi-rail" configuration. The loop slowly grew, and the peninsula grew, until in late 1998 we went again to an all-out end-to-end layout giving us one big loop by traversing almost every module twice, a point-to-point local line, and a surviving small peninsula with the bi-rail configuration. For a while, we went to complete DCC operation. Then, with new members joining the club, DC made a come-back, and we now have both systems side by side. At the same time, we began to work towards having two long loops, not just one, by picking up the regular blue line again, giving us 4 tracks on every module. The need for a second loop that runs two tracks around rather than just one lead to the resurfacing of a loop of modules in our layout. The red and yellow lines in the loop provided the turn-around, and the blue and alt-blue lines in the loop make for decent places to run trains under the traditional DC control. To improve our flexibility in setting up our layout, the bi-rail configuration has now all but vanished, the purpose of the bi-rail track being taken over by the alternate blue line in the surviving and thriving peninsula. |
Below are some of the most recent layouts we have set up or joined. You can scroll through our growing archive of layouts as well.
In 1997, we had a fictional railroad overlaid on our layout, the "Texas Northern Railroad" or TNRR. This was an attempt to provide a basis for operation, but with the layout essentially coming together only at train shows, this enterprise did not really get off the ground. The following changes to the layout then made the TNRR just another part of our history. You can read more about it here.
The TNRR pages include a collection of photos from each module. We have extended this collection to cover all modules present and past that we can document, and their evolution over time. You can find an index to all the modules pages here.
